Enigma Semillon review by Michael Hince on ‘Heard it through the grapevine December 2012

Today’s Wine of the Week is a 2012 Bromley Enigma Semillon from Bromley Wines at Clifton Springs in the Geelong region. 11% alc – RRP $22.50 from Armadale Cellars.

It took out a Bronze medal at both the 2012 Concours des Vins du Victoria Awards and the 2012 Geelong Wine Show.

A bit of a surprise from Geelong as the region is not noted for its Semillon – this is a zesty, zingy, light, fresh, drink-now wine with a refreshing uplifted palate.

This is not one of your aged Hunter Valley type robust- textured, oily Semillons that usually reek of candied fruit, caramel apricot or peachy- honey and vanilla and respond well to good oak – rather it’s more akin to a Sauvignon Blanc without the dominant, upfront fruit salad profile or the pronounced herbaceous overtones.

It has fresh, forward, racy, uncomplicated fruit with a touch of citrus and spice and a hint of mineral.

For those seeking an alternative to those grassy, cat’s pee-like NZ sauvignon blancs this is an ideal wine, light refreshing and very easy to drink.

I can see why it was awarded bronze and am off to get some more to serve with tomorrow’s seafood lunch.
